<text>
Lynn Book’s original multimedia performance project, Physical Vision, premiered at Randolph Street Gallery, in Chicago, December, 1989 and continued to be performed through 1990 at venues in Chicago and New York. For this solo project, Book was interrogating Woman’s subjectivity within and outside of patriarchal structures, in particular, via language and visual representation. Book’s provocative physicality in conjunction with disruptive writing and voice tactics challenged notions of the 19th C hysteric feminine that initiates the performance as a preset with the performer arranging flowers in a large vase as the audience enters the space. Sketching a disjointed trajectory Book transforms into a complexity of gender plays, ending with a typically masculinized rock and roller contemporary to the time of the performance in the late 1980s. The project marked the first time Book worked with a director - Jill Daly, and was a continuation of her collaboration with experimental filmmaker, Sharon Couzin that began with “Standing In”. Cousin shot and edited a short film, with Book (co-directing the film) and Daly performing that worked with selected text from Marguerite Duras’ “The Malady of Death”. Kent Devereaux composed sound for the project and Lou Mallozzi was the lighting designer. Book wrote and/or arranged found text (except for the Duras excerpt) and composed the vocal melodies. Items included in this collection include: video documentation from the Randolph Street Gallery and Organic Theater performances, as well as 2 studies; 60 color photo slides from the Organic Theater performance, performance text, a film for the performance, audio files played during the performance, press reviews, venue brochures, announcements.

*The performance text was written primarily by Book, but also included excerpts from
Marguerite Duras’, “The Malady of Death”, a medieval description of odiferous atmospheres, edited by Piero Camporesi titled, “The Incorruptible Flesh: Bodily Mutation and Mortification in Religion and Folklore”, and a found text on the term corsage.

A primary theoretical reference was Trinh T. Minh Haha’s, “Woman, Native, Other”.
Additional references of note included critical French Feminists Helene Cixous and Luce Irigaray.

Initiated out of Book’s notes, writings, and composition ideas on her longstanding investigation of states of desire – from bodily erotism to material consumption – the duo created new musical and sonic environments, with Book on voice, electronics and sound effects. A thematically coherent assemblage of 8 discreet works found form in “bird” with Norton on vibraphone and Book hovering between extended sound and impressionistic words, and “blink”, a driving rant text by Book written on September 10, 2001 and in the post 9-11 Iraq war days. Valeria Vasilevski directed this performative concert in collaboration with Book, whose creative works often involved distinct image-based, physical stagings. Vasilevski also directed Book at the Kitchen for the final iteration of “Gorgeous Fever” (1997). Book performed several works at Roulette from the early 90s to 2007 an important New York City (and now Brooklyn) venue for contemporary new and experimental music. Other performances of “notes on desire” included a solo version by Book at the Bowery Poetry Club, NYC and with a small ensemble at Wake Forest University in 2006, including Jacqui Carrasco on violin (also collaborating with Book in the “Regarding Next” project) and Joe Morgan, electronics, with a cameo appearance by Mark Linga on accordion. Book and Norton performed iterations of “notes on desire” in Chicago at Hothouse and the Michiana Festival, Michigan in July, 2003. Book later recorded some of these works and/or used excerpts from live recordings of the Roulette concert on her 2009 self-published CD, “voicing bodies”, also included in the LBPA. The “notes on desire” collection includes: video documentation from 2 performances, 4 text-scores by Book, printed matter including card announcements, flyers, venue brochure, press reviews, and photo stills
</text>

                  <text>
“Mercuria” was a collaborative multimedia project that Lynn Book developed and performed with vocal artist and Meredith Monk company member, Theo Bleckmann from 1995 to 1998. The Mercuria collection is comprised of several video documents from Chicago and New York including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and at HERE in New York City. Overall, the artists considered this project an encounter with the fluidity of time, desire, sexuality and memory through robust vocal and physical experimentation and composition. They co-designed the lighting and staging, as well as the real time recording through various audio cassette players known as the ‘walkman’. Book was the primary writer of text passages for the performance, with Beckmann contributing to more improvised sections, such as “Two Fighters”. “Mercuria” got its start as “In Passing” when Book was invited for a project residency at one of Chicago’s most enduring alternative artist-run spaces (1973-1997). She and Bleckmann, who lived in New York, launched their process via “mail, fax, phone and tape”. Collaborators along the way included, Chris Pretorious, Eric Leonardson and Jens Brand. The collection includes several video documents, both edited and complete performances, performance text and notes, color slides and photo stills, venue brochures and announcements, and press reviews.
