<text>
Lynn Book’s original multimedia performance work, “Standing In”, was included in “Performance Chicago”, a co-curated event by the Renaissance Society, University of Chicago and the State of Illinois Gallery. Book, along with two other performance artists, Hudson and James Grigsby, presented their work at Beacon Street Theater, Chicago in 1987. In this project Book, using feminist theoretical frameworks, highlighted themes of presence and absence by way of multiple plays on the idea of the stand-in – someone or something replacing something else. Book’s increasing interrogation of the problem of Woman as representation was finding form here, and later with greater nuance in 3 works that ensued: “Legacy”, “Physical Vision” and “Gorgeous Fever”. Her emerging years-long collaboration with experimental filmmaker Sharon Couzin, finds her in a rare appearance as performer. Couzin herself was standing in as a director/shooter, as well as a complexly gendered lecturer on poiesis (bringing something into existence that didn’t exist before). Simultaneously, Couzin was collaborating with Book to create a 16mm film entitled, “Bouquet”, which premiered at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Footage from this film was projected on the white toga Book wore here, and again in the performance, “Legacy”, which also ‘borrowed’ the ‘jazz singer number’ that Book lip synched to her recorded voice. E. Jay Sims, another collaborator and cohort across several projects from the time, also performed, as well as Werner Herterich as male stand-in for director of the performance, who was, of course, a woman (Book).

                  <text>
Lynn Book’s “tongue” was an irreverent and biting solo vocal performance whose mission was to deconstruct language, meaning and power through a poetics of feminist thought in rant form. It was first developed as part of “Lynn Book Covers” at Club Lower Links, in Chicago at the time of the early 90s culture wars when gay rights was an imperative to combat the threat of the AIDS epidemic being ignored by Washington; when the artists’ prerogative was necessary in a time of attempted censorship by conservative political powers; and yet another American-led war in the Middle East was being prosecuted by the Bush (the elder) administration. The stripped down text-centered work extended the notion of ‘writing woman’s body’ (Helene Cixous) to speaking it, voicing it and reinventing what ‘voicing bodies’ (Book’s term) could be. She developed this 1991-92 work (and it developed her) through a heuristics of procedures that included ‘audio journals’ (her reinvention), free writes, and concentrated writing from theoretical, rhetorical and narrative forms that she feverishly subverted almost at the moment that she opened her mouth. In the words of former Chicago Tribune journalist and writer, Achy Obejas, “Book winds her material around itself like a coil, going back every so often to pick up a piece that at first may have seemed a throwaway… because every little piece fits into every other and resonates.”

                  <text>
“Look Back – and to begin with” was an original multimedia performance work by Lynn Book that was presented at Randolph Street Gallery in November, 1986. Book’s characteristic investment in the creation of images and inventive physicality was intact, and a new emphasis on voice was emerging in this approximately 45-minute work. She took up themes of time and memory, through symbolic and evocative phrases, inventing an inner logic of connections through vignettes (reciting a text she keeps forgetting inside a suspended picture frame) and object interaction (a toy organ whose loose keys sounded while Book moved and swayed with it in the darkness). Undercurrents of research included Book’s increasing interest in the status of the feminine within patriarchal culture from both political as well as psychoanalytic orientations. At the same time Book was drawing from other literary texts including Gertrude Stein’s “How to Be an American” and the 1920s satirical novel by Aldous Huxley, “Those Barren Leaves”. It was through the making of this performance that Book developed a significant practice that sustained over several decades - the audio journal - through which she theorized and practiced what became a practicable philosophy she termed, “voicing bodies”. This collection includes a short edited video work, shot and edited by Dave Jones and Suzie Silver, pages from the Huxley book (the only text used during the performance), performance development notes, structuration and cue documents, program and Randolph Street Gallery venue brochure.

Credits:
Lynn Book, artist, choreographer, director, composer, performer
Carrie Staffaucher, performer ‘double’
Luke Dohner, stagehand-performer
Michael Riley, stagehand-performer

Performance Date:
November, 1986, Randolph Street Gallery, Chicago
</text>

                  <text>
“Local Distraction” was a multimedia performance project and also a site-specific work created by Lynn Book in Memphis, TN, 1983. It was staged in the oldest YMCA in the urban core at the invitation of noted downtown developer Henry Turley. The sunken racquetball court was the playing area that Book chose for its acoustics and the placement of bleacher seating on the opposite side of a large protective glass barrier. It became the site for audiences to view this and another work by dancer and choreographer Katherine Mitchell (a collaborative partner with Book producing events and co-creating performance projects from 1978 - 1987 (Memphis and Chicago). Book salvaged sports and locker room furniture for the work including benches and large mirrors that a line of women slowly carried across the court in unison, catching audience reflections as they processed. Book’s project included 8 performers, a film projection of a 9th performer who, using American Sign Language, enlarged the concepts of communication structures, hierarchies of order, gender status and an inherent danger and promise of disjunct narratives. This collection includes photo slide documentation, the film for performance, announcement, performance structure handwritten notes.

Lynn Book was the artist, director, designer, videographer and performer
</text>

                  <text>
Lynn Book’s original, multimedia performance work Legacy, originally titled “Leg(s)eee!!”, premiered at the Cleveland Public Theater, Cleveland, OH in 1988. The performance was the first of what the artist saw as a trilogy of works concerned with the cultural construction of the feminine within a patriarchal system. The name of the performance project came to be referred to as “Legacy'', with the exception of an artists’ publication for the Chicago journal, Whitewalls (1978-2002). In this project, Book was explicitly interrogating representation, the male gaze, and performing critique of popular stereotypes of Woman as object of desire. She used disruption to challenge these roles and norms in an effort to locate subjectivity as critical to agency even as it must work within deeply embedded systems of oppression. In this performance and the two related works - “Physical Vision”, 1989-90, and “Gorgeous Fever”, 1994-97 - Book collaborated with experimental filmmaker, Sharon Couzin, to create a short film that was projected during the live performance. Simultaneously, Couzin was collaborating with Book to create a 16mm film ‘portrait’ entitled, “Bouquet”, which premiered at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. There were several important scholarly references for Book, including the pivotal “The Legs of the Countess” by Abigail Solomon-Godeau in October journal, volume 39, winter 1986. It inspired Book to research a portfolio of mid-19th C photographs of the Countess Maria Di Castiglione held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art archives.

Legacy was developed within the context of an Artist Residency at the Cleveland Institute of Art and included faculty and students in the production of this and another short work titled, “Well of Miss Thriplow”, also performed at the Cleveland Public Theater. “Legacy” ran about 45 minutes as a live performance; a shorter video documentation, shot and edited by Dawn Wiedemann is included in this Collection. Book also performed “Legacy'' at the Getz Theater of Columbia College, Chicago as a benefit for the Peace Museum, and at the Memphis Center for Contemporary Art, Memphis, TN in 1989. Editors for Whitewalls, “a magazine of writings by artists” published in Chicago, invited Book to create a piece for the Fall 1988 issue; “LEG(S)eee!” is included in this project Collection. Other artifacts in this collection include project development notes, scholarly research used to lay groundwork for the project, including the above mentioned, as well as the well-known essay by Laura Mulvey, “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema”, versions of the performance text, process notes, photo slides, performance object, handwritten performance structure notes.
</text>

                  <text>
Because It’s Round? was an original multimedia performance project by Lynn Book for 12 performers about crowds, power, sentimentality and colliding values systems. She also developed material coming directly out of the event of the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion. Book realized the project at MoMing Dance and Arts Center, Chicago, where it was performed over three nights in the main presenting space. Book’s performance was on a shared bill with Hudson (who later founded Feature Gallery); this marked the first time that performance artists were invited to show work as part of the main space season. Because It’s Round? was informed by Book’s emerging interests in Feminist and Structuralist theory, in particular ‘translating’’ concepts derived from French theorist Roland Barthes’ early essay, “The World As Object” and American Feminist, Susan Griffin’s book, “Woman and Nature”. Book’s image, movement, text and staging ideas also drew from her background in modern dance, and her experiments in writing, including for multiple voices. Total running time for the live performance was approximately 45 min.
