Mercuria, 1997, New York City, Judson Church, movement research

Description

Lynn Book collaborated with vocal artist Theo Bleckmann on Mercuria, a multimedia performance work developed and performed over the course of almost 3 years with iterations occurring in Chicago and New York at several venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago with its final performance at HERE in New York City. This unedited video documentation (28 minutes) is from a stripped down version at Judson Church series, curated by Movement Research, 1996. Overall, the artists considered this project a meditation on the fluidity of time, desire and memory and focused their efforts on their vocal and physical experimentation and composition. They co-designed the lighting and staging, as well as the real time recording through various audio cassette players known as the ‘walkman’. The original performance in 1995 titled “In Passing”, emerged from a project residency at N.A.M.E. Gallery, Chicago.
