This short, 7-minute video was edited from a 50 minute work, the 1986 multimedia performance “Because It’s Round?” by Lynn Book. Song-chant subtitles scroll over the dance shootout scene featuring four core performers, including Book, Sophia Anastasiou-Wassik, Mary Brogger and Alan Tollefson. Book was concerned with themes of crowds, power, sentimentality and the event of the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion in developing the work and drew from image, movement, text and staging ideas from her background in modern dance, sculpture and her experimental writing. It was presented at MoMing Dance and Arts Center, Chicago, an important space from the 1970s into the 90s.
