Mercuria, 1998, New York City, HERE, project video documentation part 1

Description

Lynn Book collaborated with vocal artist Theo Bleckmann on Mercuria, a multimedia performance work developed and performed over the course of almost 3 years with iterations occurring in Chicago and New York at several venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and at HERE in New York City. Overall, the artists considered this project a meditation on the fluidity of time, desire and memory and focused their efforts on their vocal and physical experimentation and composition. They co-designed the lighting and staging, as well as the real time recording through various audio cassette players known as the ‘walkman’. Book was the primary writer of text passages for the performance, with Beckmann contributing to more improvised sections, such as “Two Fighters”. This 8-minute edited video documentation from the final performance in January 1998 at HERE crystallized many of the concepts and structures that were endemic to the original performance in 1995 titled “In Passing”, N.A.M.E. Gallery, Chicago. This version of Mercuria includes German sound artist Jens Brand as sound collaborator.
